Biographical Information

Dr. Mitchell Turner (b. 1966) is an active music theorist and composer. Dr. Turner holds a Ph.D. (1999) and an M.M (1993) from the University of Georgia where he studied music theory and composition, as well as a B.S. in Communications from Georgia Southern University (1988). He studied composition with Dr. Lewis Nielson (Oberlin Conservatory), Dr. Leonard V. “Chic” Ball (the University of Georgia), Dr. William Davis (the University of Georgia) and Dr. David W. Mathew (Georgia Southern University). Dr. Turner has taught at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, the University of Georgia, Piedmont College, and Toccoa Falls College.

His music has been performed at conferences of the College Music Society and Southeastern Composers League. His music is published by Conners Publications and Wehr’s Music House.

Dr. Turner is a member of many professional music organizations, including: ASCAP, Society for Music Theory, Music Theory South East,College Music Society, the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States, and the Southeastern Composers’ League. He has read papers at meetings of GAMUT and Music Theory South East. Most recently, he read “Unification of harmony and counterpoint: dyadic voice leading in a two-dimensional pitch space” at the MTSE meeting in Tallahassee, FL, in February 2002.
